REQUIEM TERÉZIN
During the early 1940s, in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, a group of brave Jewish prisoners find hope in an abandoned piano.
Set to the Requiem Aeternam section of Verdi’s Requiem, Requiem Terezin tells the story of composer Rafael Schächter and a group of Jewish prisoners during the early 1940’s in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. When Rafi finds an abandoned piano in the basement of one of the barracks, an idea occurs to him. Together with his fellow inmates, he decides to put on a secret performance for the Jewish community in the camp. But freedom and hope come at a cost. Requiem Terezin intercuts between what we imagine to be the camp’s first underground performance and the night Rafael Schächter and his friends liberate an abandoned piano. It shows us how one small act of defiance can spark hope in the darkest of places and the sacrifice it takes to achieve it.
